We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

About the play: The time is 1959. The place is a seedy bar in Philadelphia. An audience sits waiting, not knowing that they are about to witness history as the legendary chanteuse steps into the spotlight for the last time, four months before her death at age 44.  Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill is full of heart-melting numbers like “God Bless the Child,” “Strange Fruit,” and “What a Little Moonlight Can Do”. Billie bares her loves and losses in this intimate and stunning Tony Award-winning Broadway musical.

Best Friends Animal Society’s Strut Your Mutt @ Exposition Park

Best Friends Animal Society’s Strut Your Mutt is a series of charity dog walks that bring entire communities together to raise money to help save the lives of homeless pets.

This is much more then a fundraising walk. Strut Your Mutt is a fun-filled festival where four-, three- and two-legged participants of all ages can take part in activities like doggie yoga, pet portraits, music, contests and more.

In 2018, at the many events across the country, as well as online, participants came together to show their support for the animals. Together, more than $2.3 million was raised.

Say What! TENth Annual –can you believe it! How Time Flies! How a community vitally sustains itself! You better believe it!

Los Angeles Poverty Department celebrates and preserves the rich artistic heritage of Skid Row and beginning with the first Festival in 2009 has generated a registry of Skid Row artists, which now numbers more than 800.

The Festival for All Skid Row Artists is a two-day festival of performing and visual art with plenty of music, showcasing the diverse range of talents among Skid Row residents. The festival has become one of the most anticipated grassroots cultural events in Skid Row where over 100 Skid Row Artists perform or display their artwork to enthusiastic audiences. Many come back each year and prepare their acts and works of art, and thanks to extensive street outreach, many people will get on-stage for the very first time and get in the mix of the vibrant Skid Row artistic culture.

LAPD partners with Studio 526 and United Coalition East Prevention Project (UCEPP) to produce the Festival. This year, the Goethe-Institut is an additional producing partner. The Goethe-Institut is organizing the event series “Worlds of Homelessness”, including discussions, music and film screenings, that begins Tuesday October 22, at LA Poverty Department’s Skid Row History Museum & Archive (with additional sites at Sci-Arc and Navel). The project brings together local and international artists, architects, scholars and others and culminates with the 2 days of the Festival.

“Worlds of Homelessness” will open with music by the LA Playmakers and the Playmakers will close out the Festival on Sunday Afternoon. The LA Playmakers are a local band founded by Joseph Warren and Stan Watson 5yrs ago. These accomplished professional musicians have played with a number of well known jazz and pop music figures. They can play anything, R&B, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Gospel– and they do.  The band members have one thing in common: they all were members of the Praise and Worship Team at Skid Row’s Central City Church of the Nazarene.

Festival attendees are invited to participate in a range of artist facilitated workshops and creativity stations. The LA City Department of City Planning will be there to gather community input on their emerging plan for downtown DTLA2040 and Skid Row Now & 2040, will also be getting festival-goer input on their community generated plan for a Skid Row future without displacement and with housing for area residents now on the streets. LAPD’s Festival for All Skid Row Artists gives audiences a chance to hear what you usually don’t hear about Skid Row: that it is a community rich with talent!

Good Shepard Center

Volunteers are essential to the success of Good Shepherd Center and help us improve the lives of homeless women and children in our community. We would love to have you join our team as a volunteer. Prior to volunteering we strongly reccomend that you participate in a tour of our facilites. Tours are offered the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 am.  NOTE: There will be no tour in December.

Tours begin at our Farley House Residence, located at 1671 Beverly Blvd. Parking and entrance to the building are in the alley located one block north of Beverly Blvd., off Union Ave.

The tour takes a little more than an hour and will be followed by a Volunteer Information and Orientation. If you are interested in volunteering or learning how how you can get involved (e.g. donating, serving on our Auxiliary Board, or assisting with fund-raising), we strongly encourage you to participate in the tour.

Those that attend the Volunteer Information and Orientation portion will:

  • Learn more about Good Shepherd Centers’ programs
  • Be provided with a list of current volunteer opportunities and a job description
  • Have an opportunity to fill out a volunteer application

Requirements for Volunteers:

  • Fill out a volunteer application
  • Pass a background check.or be live scan fingerprinted at one of our Live Scan Centers. (depending on your volunteer position).
  • TB clearance (at your expense or there are facilities that do it for free;  we will provide you with that information)
  • Interview by a staff member/s
  • Please note: Minors do not need to pass a background check but will need parental or guardian approval (signature)

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Fund-raising
  • Join our Outreach Team
  • Join our Auxiliary Board
  • Assist in our Family Services Program
  • Serve as a tutor in Math or English for women working on their GED. Tutoring is one on one and hours are flexible.
  • Prepare (or cater) a meal and serve to residents at one of our shelters
  • Facilitate an employment related seminar-this can be a one time commitment.
  • Organize our donation room. You must be able to work independently with little supervision. Hours are flexible but must be weekdays, during regular business hours. Great organizational abilities a plus!
  • Facilitate a drive (food, toiletries, beauty products). Ask about our incentive program.
  • Volunteer opportunities change periodically depending on our needs at the time. We welcome your ideas.
One Generation Farmers Market Volunteer @ One Generation
Oct 27 @ 7:00 am – 1:00 pm

Every Sunday volunteers sign in at 7am and out at 1pm to help greet at the entrance gates and offer information about ONEgeneration services, help at the Bagel or Book booths, or assist a Farmers or small business for the day.  This event is a walk in position so you can come any Sunday that you are available from 7am to 1pm, no partial shifts.  

When volunteers sign out at 1pm they will receive a completion letter for their hours if needed.

Dorris Place Elementary desperately needs books for its school and classroom libraries. Please join us for a day of book processing and mural painting. If you plan to paint, please dress appropriately. Our paint doesn't wash out. Food is provided to volunteers without dietary restrictions. Please be prepared to stay until 2 p.m. though we often finish earlier

 

No groups! Individual and family sign-ups only

 

Please consider donating $10 per volunteer to help offset costs for the day.
