Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar

We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.

SPY’s 6th Annual Carnival
Oct 7 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Join us on Sunday, October 7th, 2018, for our 6th Annual Carnival! Hosted by SPY Board Member Peter Micelli and his wife Jennifer Lang at their home. This family friendly event includes carnival games, food and drink, a raffle, and more! 100% of funds raised from Carnival will go towards SPY's programs that help homeless youth exit the streets.

Safe Place for Youth (SPY) provides life-saving support to homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-25 in West Los Angeles. Our mission is to inspire, nurture, and empower the resilient human spirit of homeless youth by providing immediate and lasting solutions, one young person at a time. We do this through a continuum of care including case management, education and employment support, health and wellness care, street outreach, and access to basic survival needs of food, showers and clothing. In 2017, SPY provided services to 1,171 individual homeless and at-risk youth.

HOW YOU CAN VOLUNTEER AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE

EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CONNECTION

Each year, our volunteers contribute 5000+ hours, accounting for almost 80% of our services. If you're interested in promoting peace in the lives of foster youth, join our community and bring your knowledge and compassion to those who will truly benefit. It's a truly rewarding experience!

Primarily our volunteers connect with youth on Saturdays from 9am – 1pm in an environment that focuses on creativity, education, life skills building, health and wellness. Under the guidance of our staff, volunteers are given the tools to work one-to-one with youth, developing strong bonds that leave a lasting impression.

HERE'S A QUICK REQUIREMENT CHECKLIST:
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • Contribute at least 8 hours a month [2 Saturdays per month] and commit to a minimum of one year of service
    • Obtain Department of Justice clearance
    • Attend both a new volunteer orientation and training

And here's some of the things you'll be doing:

    • Engage, mentor and provide leadership for youth in foster care, ages 4-18 years old
    • Support our educational team in facilitating creative learning onsite and on field trips
    • Create a consistent, nurturing community based environment
    • Have fun making new friends with like-minded folks!

Young Storytellers
Feb 19 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Young Storytellers is an arts education nonprofit with programs in public elementary schools all over Los Angeles and a few remote locations across the country. Using the tried and true techniques of mentoring, collaboration, and performance, we provide students with an opportunity to write stories and see them brought to life on stage. Our mission is to inspire young people to discover the power of their own voice. Our Script to Stage program is a nine-week program with volunteers offering one-on-one mentoring for fifth graders where they learn creative self-expression by writing their very own screenplay. At the end of the program, we have working actors come perform the plays live! Each session occurs for one hour once a week at individual school sites typically during their lunch hour. We especially need amazing volunteers like you for the following three schools that start next week:

El Rincon Elementary (11177 Overland Ave Culver City CA 90230)

Tuesdays from 1-2 pm beginning 2/19

Farragut Elementary (10820 Farragut Dr, Culver City, CA 90230)

Tuesdays from 12:45-1:45 pm beginning 2/19

Linwood Howe Elementary (4100 Irving Place, Culver City, CA 90232)

Wednesdays from 12:45-1:45 pm beginning 2/20

If you're interested in joining us this term, let us know! Please email Andrea Barreto at andrea@youngstorytellers.com. You can also contact us by phone at (323) 962-4500.
