We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

• Stephen Bruno •
Vice President, Global Creative Marketing, Netflix

As the Vice President of Global Creative Marketing at Netflix, Stephen Bruno oversees the global positioning and creative execution for all of Netflix Originals marketing campaigns. This encompasses series (e.g. Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Narcos, Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why), documentaries (e.g. Making a Murderer, 13th, Amanda Knox, Chef’s Table), comedy specials (e.g. Dave Chappelle, Sarah Silverman, Louis CK) and feature films (e.g. Beasts of No Nation, Okja, War Machine, Bright). He arrived at Netflix in January 2015 after relocating to Los Angeles from New York City.  

A veteran entertainment marketing executive, Stephen had previously been with The Weinstein Company and Miramax Films for a combined total of over 11 years.  Most recently as the President of Marketing, Stephen successfully supervised the execution of theatrical releases including Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook, Lee Daniel’s The Butler, The Artist, and Fruitvale Station.Between his two tours at The Weinstein Company, Stephen worked at HBO as a Director of Consumer Marketing. He helped to generate record ratings for returning seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Eastbound and Down.  

Stephen Bruno graduated from Boston University and currently lives in Santa Monica with his wife, Melissa, and three young children: Rex, Lila, and Greta. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Stephen is a lifelong Eagles fan, and he prefers his cheesesteaks from Jim’s.

Adult Volunteer

The Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter (VBAS) is a 100% volunteer-run organization looking for committed volunteers who are able to provide basic care for the animals and assist with adoptions as well as participate in and run their various programs.

Volunteer Requirements

  • You must be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must commit to volunteer 8 hours per month.
  • You must commit to volunteering for a minimum of one year.

Orientation

  • Orientation occurs every other month.
  • Please allow 60-90 minutes for the orientation.
  • During Orientation they will cover general Shelter duties, event committees, VBAS requirements, training, KFP, take a tour and Q&A.
  • Orientation is on a first-come, first-served basis.  The first 30 people to sign up will be able to attend Orientation.  If you miss this, you will have to wait and attend the NEXT Orientation posted date.
  • Sign up for the March 25th orientation session to sign up for the next orientation session starting March 4th.

Volunteer Application Process

  • Applications are available at http://thevbas.org/volunteer for one week after each orientation.
  • Upon receipt of your application you will be given a list of Volunteers with their schedules and observe them at the Shelter at least 2 times.
  • You will then be move on and be interviewed by a VBAS member.
  • You will then go through LiveScan and a minimal background check as required by the City of Burbank.
  • Please note: completion of any or all of the above steps does not automatically constitute acceptance as a VBAS volunteer.  Upon approval from both the VBAS and the Burbank Police Department, your badge will be available and you will be contacted to schedule your first training session.
  • Please allow approximately 3-6 months to complete this application process.
Tree Planting

More new trees are coming to North Long Beach in 2017!  I am writing to invite you and your groups to volunteer at this tree planting event! 

 

The Port of Long Beach has provided funding to plant 6,000 trees in Long Beach neighborhoods through 2020!  Businesses and community groups are partnering with Housing and Neighborhood Services to provide volunteers at the tree planting events. 

 

Public Works will survey the neighborhood for tree planting locations and Housing and Neighborhood ServicesBureau staff will mail letters to the property owners of all the adjacent sites to notify them that trees will be installed and to provide them with an opportunity to decline them.   

 Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau staff will deliver all the trees and tools on planting day.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES 2ND ANNUAL COMMUNITY BBQ FUNDRAISER

Catholic Charities is hosting its 2nd Annual Community BBQ fundrasier to support its shelters and community centers in order to continue providing services to the poor families and the homeless. All are well to come to this event, and enjoy the festivites. The BBQ plates will be just $12.00 and $15.00 for deliveries. Attendees will have choice of  two meat, two sides, and assortments of desserts. In addition, a drink will be added to your meal. For at the door purchases, we only accept cash,therefore, no credit cards nor checks.

Make the Connection

 Make the Connection — VA’s leading national mental health awareness campaign — is coming to LA to film Veterans and their families to participate in a national campaign to help Veterans manage mental health challenges that affect their well-being and their daily lives. They can join more than 500 Veterans and family members who have participated in the Make the Connection campaign to spread the word about mental health and encourage Veterans to reach out for support.

 

Who: Any Veteran — of any age or branch of service (including National Guard and Reserve) — with or without his or her family

When: Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, for approximately two hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

What: On-camera, professionally filmed interview to talk about experiences with mental health challenges and recovery

Where: Los Angeles; address provided upon confirmation of participation

All Peoples 21st Annual Health, Resource and Book Fair @ All Peoples Community Center

All Peoples will be holding our 21st Annual Health, Resource and Book Fair.  This year our Theme is "Health, Wealth, & Happiness" and will feature over 50 Agency Booths to provide free resources and screenings for flu shots, diabetes, cholesterol, mammograms, blood pressure, HIV, vision, dental, and other health related issues.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

 

Volunteers are still needed the day of the event!

 

There are 2 shifts available:

 

9:00 am – 12:00 pm

 

12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

 

*There will also be a Volunteer meeting the day before the event.
