Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

The series returns to Occidental March 29 with Youth Movement: Mayors Aja Brown and Robert Garcia, featuring Brown, mayor of Compton since 2013, and Garcia, mayor of Long Beach since 2014. As two of the youngest (Brown is 34, Garcia 39) mayors in Southern California, they represent a new generation of political leadership in the region. They’ll discuss their own paths to election, the state of their cities and the opportunities and challenges of piloting cities in the shadow of giant Los Angeles. This unique exhibition will showcase art work by artists from LA who live/work/exhibit in the Arts District of Downtown and the artists of Skid Row who live and work adjacently. Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year event is April 5, 2017. The awards ceremony is at El Capitan Theatre from (rehearsal 4pm) 6:30pm to 8pm and the after party is at Madame Tussauds Hollywood Wax Museum on their rooftop from 8pm-9:30pm. They are in search of several hardworking volunteers to assist with the event … so sign up today!
BGCA’S PREMIER RECOGNITION PROGRAM FOR CLUB MEMBERS
The 2017 Youth of the Year Event will be held at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. To get involved and to assist in the production, please click HERE. The requirements to be a “Youth of the Year” is focused on Academic Achievement, Community Service, Character, fitness and sports, providing a well-rounded exceptional candidate for schools. There will be 23 outstanding nominees.

Since 1947, Youth of the Year has been Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club teens. Club members who earn the youth of the Year title embody the values of leadership service; academic excellence; and healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the critical impact that Boys Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people.
Local Clubs recognize members ages 14 to 18 as Youth of the Month Winners and select a Youth of the Year, who then participates in state competitions. State winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship and advance to regional competitions. Regional winners receive an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to $40,000. Six youth, including five regional winners and a military winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year competition for a chance at an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable up to $100,000 for four years. The National Youth of the Year represents all Boys & Girls Club youth.

Earth Day South LA, hosted by Community Services Unlimited, will take art, music, food and activities to focus on issues pertinent to saving our planet. From gardening to bike safety to accessing health care, you don't want to miss this!

We love working for (and with!) veterans. We’ll be hosting vets from all over town. Together, we’ll enjoy great games (including our 1st-Ever Trivia Night) and entertainment from our amazing friends, The New Directions Veterans’ Choir, who are back for a return performance! We’ll also be writing letters to military personnel on active duty. Then, of course, everyone’s invited for a big, memorable Big Sunday community dinner. It’s a great way to show the vets how much we care!
We are collecting comic books for our pals at Operation Gratitude to include in their care packages that are sent to service members deployed overseas. We’re also collecting unexpired, non-perishable food for the Downtown VA as part of April’s End of the Month Club.
