We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

LA Makerspace is a community-based organization whose mission is to foster innovation among Angelenos by offering increased access to new opportunities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics).
Program Description: LA Makerspace (LAM) seeks a creative, dynamic instructor with a strong maker background to teach Minecraft workshops for kids, teens, and adults. In this role, you will be responsible for facilitating workshops in public libraries, schools, and private settings based on curriculum developed by LA Makerspace. Working within the framework of this curriculum, instructors are encouraged to customize the workshops to suit their instructional styles and the needs of the workshop participants.
Volunteer Role & Responsibilities: Facilitate Minecraft workshops in locations throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Most workshops are provided through the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) system and take place at LAPL branches throughout the city. They also provide occasional workshops for school groups or special events. Coordinate with LAM staff to order and deliver supplies and tools to workshop sites.
Create a safe and fun learning environment for participants, including teaching safety skills for materials and equipment. Guide Minecraft Assistant(s) in setup and how to manage/handle situations that may arise. Administer program evaluations at the end of each workshop. Participate in research and curriculum development projects.
Time Commitment: Variable hours
Requirements: Technical knowledge about Minecraft and multiplayer servers. Familiarity with the online Minecraft community. Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and players’ questions/challenges during a session. Ability to multitask and juggle questions in a hectic, free play environment. Creative approach to gaming aligned with maker ideals. Strong interest and background in maker pedagogy; ability to teach maker learning styles to beginners. Commitment to ongoing skill development.

CURRENT:LA Water is looking for passionate art enthusiasts to assist in Los Angeles’ first citywide Public Art Biennial taking place in summer, 2016. Get an insider's look at the exhibitions while educating others about the artists and their mission to create awareness about societal struggles we see in our city.

Volunteer Role & Responsibilities:
- Learn about the artist and the work to provide visitors with background about the exhibition
- Learn about and provide information on the overall biennial, upcoming events, and artist/site locations
- Welcomes and guides attendees to the artworks, assists with lighting and way finding when necessary
- Check-in guests, manage event capacity, maintain grounds, and let Site Coordinator know if there are any problems.
- Assists with parking as necessary, identifies site needs, replaces items as necessary, and checks signage for repairs

Violence Intervention Program (VIP) is kicking off its annual Back to School Drive, focused on providing over 800 backpacks full of basic school supplies to clients and siblings. VIP’s clients represent a highly vulnerable population of at-risk and foster youth, but they believe every child should start the first day of school with the confidence to succeed and they need your help! VIP is looking for individuals and businesses to organize a drive this summer with their schools, offices, or community groups to collect backpacks and supplies (i.e. binders, notepads, folders, composition books). They are also looking for individuals to volunteer to prepare for the event by filling and sorting backpacks and help hand out backpacks on the day of the event. NewFilmmakers Los Angeles is looking for volunteers for their monthly screenings! NFMLA is a non-profit dedicated to supporting emerging indie talent by screening a diverse body of shorts and features each month.
Volunteers are needed for a Friday and Saturday once a month to help with set-up, reception, red carpet, ticketing, and breakdown. The evening is broken into 2 shifts, so when volunteers are not working, they can hang out and enjoy the event! To find out how to help, please contact Marissa@nfmla.org.
Looking for a way to give back to our veterans? Join So Cal Quilts of Valor for their Sew Day as they make quilts for our nation’s heroes!
This volunteer activity is FREE. If you want to bring a sewing machine or a project to work on, you may; OR you can use one of the classroom machines to sew quilts using Quilts of Valor’s kits to be given to military veterans when finished. Join our friends at So Cal Quilts of Valor for their Sew Days held every Thursday (except on holidays). Volunteers are needed to help construct quilts to be awarded to veterans to thank them for their service and/or help them in their healing. For more info, please visit www.socalqov.org.
