Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

On January 30th, Wanderlust Hollywood is hosting a town hall focused on mindful policy for a healthy and prosperous America. Called Mindful America, this new community gathering will focus on topics that yogis, meditators, conscious foodies, and progressive thinkers can rally behind.
Speakers include Congressman Tim Ryan, Marianne Williamson, Kerri Kelly, Prince Ea, Mike de la Rocha and Seane Corne. Engage with thought-leaders from a variety of backgrounds and have a chance to ask questions for an active discussion. Join the movement to bring new mindful policies to life. Women writers and directors in the entertainment industry constantly encounter roadblocks when attempting to advance their careers – even when they are just as talented and capable as their male counterparts. Women actors have a similar problem simply because the number of female roles is significantly less than for men. Friend of Big Sunday Amy Lloyd and her business partner Christina Gray have combined efforts to combat this issue with a special IndieGogo campaign for their production company “Chicks Who Make Flicks.” This organization is working to do its part to increase visibility and provide more opportunities for women. The production company creates films made by women, films that tell great woman’s stories, films that capture the voices of women from all over the world and at every stage of their life. Their goal is to create an environment that supports, encourages, and celebrates talented female filmmakers. Volunteer with 826LA to provide one-on-one writing assistance to students in high-need LA public schools. Upcoming opportunities include creative media to respond to the Watts Uprising with Locke H.S, narratives of resilience with Roosevelt H.S., expository writing support with ALC, journalistic writing about environment and community with Dorsey H.S., and more.

First Fridays 2016: Big Screens, Bigger Science. NHM’s once-a-month music and more series explores the intersection of science and fiction. Scientists will discuss the good, the bad and the ridiculous in film and how Hollywood continues to inspire the next frontier of science exploration. Join them each month to learn how.

Don’t miss a hike around a scenic escape in the middle of LA–FRANKLIN CANYON PARK with our friends at Hike It Up!
Everyone will meet in the parking lot near the museum/ranger station off of Mulholland and Coldwater Canyon. Please drive carefully and stop at every stop signal (they give out tickets-camera enforced park).
There’s plenty of parking and a great escape. Beginner hikers welcome! Expect dirt trails, fun stairs to climb, NATURE- NATURE- NATURE—even a lake! Bring your camera, water and comfortable shoes for walking.
ALL HIKE IT UP EVENTS ARE A WAY TO HELP THE COMMUNITY, SO PLEASE BRING DONATIONS OF HYGIENE ITEMS (i.e. shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene items, soap bars, etc. [travel-size items welcome]).
Only enter park off of Mulholland and Coldwater Canyon (Studio City)–it’s confusing from the Beverly Hills side unless you know the route. The hike leader is also offering to meet everyone 15 minutes early at Tree People, before taking a caravan to the location. Let Hike know if you want to meet a bit early to follow him into the park instead.
