Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.
If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.
Arts Brookfield presents a highly acclaimed public art installation by Australian artist Amanda Parer. The installation, titled Intrude, features seven monumental rabbits constructed of sewn white nylon that have been inflated and internally lit. Two of the seven rabbits were specially commissioned by Arts Brookfield, each scaling over two stories in height.
Rabbits in Parer’s native Australia are an out of control pest first introduced by white settlers in 1777. Their intrusion into the landscape and impact on the country’s endemic species was the initial inspiration for Intrude. Their presence in LA’s urban landscape invites viewers to get up close, cuddle and enjoy while also asking one to consider every species’ larger than life impact on their surroundings.
The seven rabbits of Intrude will be spread across several Brookfield properties on Bunker Hill and at the FIGat7th retail center in downtown Los Angeles from June 5 – June 11.

The OPCC and Lamp Community Summer Fundraiser is just around the corner on Saturday, June 11th and they need help from volunteers to staff the event to ensure it is a success! This fundraiser is hosted by the Vintage Hollywood Foundation and it raises critical funds that help these organizations keep their doors open to provide services to the community’s most vulnerable neighbors.
There are 3 shifts that need to be filled and they’ll need a LOT of hands on deck!
- Friday June 10th, 2016 – 2:00pm – 7:00pm – 15 volunteers needed
- Saturday June 11th, 2016 – 9:00am – 2:00pm – 15 volunteers needed
- Saturday June 11th, 2016 – 4:00pm – 10:30pm – 30 volunteers needed (must be 21 years or older**)
What roles can you fill?
- Event set-up – strong and able bodied volunteers needed to assist in setting up the event space up
- Check in & Registration – volunteers will ensure all guests, media and celebrities are checked in
- Silent & live auction monitors – volunteers who love playing on cell phones are needed, as they will be using an electronic bidding system that works right through guests’ cell phones
- Winery and restaurant liaisons – volunteers will ensure all the participating wineries and restaurants are supported and stocked with what they need
- The green team – volunteers will be circulating on-site at all times to make sure the grounds are looking pristine throughout the entire event itself
- Event break-down – strong and able bodied volunteers are needed to help break down after the event wraps up at 9:00 pm; the more help on site, the faster everyone finishes!
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Kate Berman at kberman@opcc.net. For more info on OPCC and Lamp Community, please visit www.opcc.net and www.lampcommunity.org, respectively.

Need help with your garden as we roll into summer? The Organic Fruit & Vegetable class led by the Arboretum’s Horticultural Supervisor, Jill Morganelli, is the perfect place to look. Jill will be taking the class to the Permasphere, Garden for All Seasons and Crescent Farm. Please bring sunscreen, a shady hat, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
The Organic Fruit and Vegetable Gardening classes at the Arboretum combine Biodynamic, Permaculture and other natural gardening techniques that align with the seasons. Each class is part of a 16-hour series that highlights how to build habitat and soil while providing solid horticultural practices for the ins-and-outs of growing organic fruits and vegetables. Tours of the Los Angeles Arboretum Garden for All Seasons and Crescent Farm help to give visual meaning to the concepts you learn in class. It is a great way to connect with the earth, your friends and family, and the community!
- Jill Morganelli, Instructor and Horticultural Supervisor at the Arboretum
- $25 Arboretum members / $35 non-members per class (includes Arboretum Admission)
- Please call 626-821-4623 to register
Summer – June 18, 2016
Summer session rolls in with an abundance of horticultural victories and dilemmas. Integrated Pest Management and disease control lead the line up to help you get rid of any unwanted guests in the garden while creating a beneficial habitat for those you do want there. Create a vibrant habitat to enjoy all year that lives harmoniously with food production. Horticultural therapy and “What Kind of Farming is It” offer thought-provoking concepts.
