Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar

We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.

“Sun Sand Sea” Fundraising Event @ Santa Monica Place
Jun 3 – Jul 4 all-day

Sun, Sand, SeaThe Sun Sand Sea event is an intriguing blend of vintage and modern art joining two art mediums: photography and painting. It’s a truly unique experience.

At its core, it is an exclusive photographic collection featuring the beaches, events and people of Santa Monica and Venice, circa 1920-1950. Curator, Branded Arts, has brought the event to a new level by commissioning cutting-edge artist, Hueman, to not only exhibit new paintings, but paint an onsite interpretive mural.

Look for Sun Sand Sea at Santa Monica Place from June 3-July 3.

Event proceeds benefit P.S. ARTS, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing high-quality arts education to California's underserved public schools and communities.

National Trails Day: Back Country Land Trust @ Meet at Joan MacQueen Middle School
Jun 4 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Volunteers Needed at Wright's Field

Join Back Country Land Trust and their community of volunteers as they host the 3rd annual volunteer event in honor of National Trails Day, a national event celebrating hiking, trails and the great outdoors! National Trails Day is organized by the American Hiking Society every year on the first Saturday in June.

This year, they'll be working to repair and maintain the trails that run alongside Alpine Creek. This winter's rains caused some sections to wash out, creating the potential for even more erosion if not repaired, as well as being a hazard for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Due to the extensive damage to this trail, we'll be filling the erosion channel with hay bales for support and using vertical mulch to close this short trail section around the washout.

Join them! All ages and abilities are welcome.

Volunteers should wear appropriate outdoor work clothes – boots or hiking shoes, sun protection, etc.  Water and all tools will be provided.

Volunteer: Family Rescue Center @ Family Rescue Center
Jun 4 @ 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Join Family Rescue Center for their weekly Saturday distribution of organic food donated from the Calabasas Farmer's Market.  They need happy, helpful volunteers to sort the fruits and vegetables and to hand them out at their center. Four to six volunteers per Saturday is preferable; teens and older, please.

To volunteer, please email your name, phone number, and preferred contact method (phone, text, email) to Julie Domingo at jewelsd2005@yahoo.com.  Please state how often you can volunteer — once a month or whatever works for you!

“Intrude” Installation @ FIGat7th
Jun 5 @ 12:00 pm – Jun 5 @ 9:00 pm

Arts Brookfield presents a highly acclaimed public art installation by Australian artist Amanda Parer. The installation, titled Intrude, features seven monumental rabbits constructed of sewn white nylon that have been inflated and internally lit. Two of the seven rabbits were specially commissioned by Arts Brookfield, each scaling over two stories in height.

Rabbits in Parer’s native Australia are an out of control pest first introduced by white settlers in 1777. Their intrusion into the landscape and impact on the country’s endemic species was the initial inspiration for Intrude. Their presence in LA’s urban landscape invites viewers to get up close, cuddle and enjoy while also asking one to consider every species’ larger than life impact on their surroundings.

The seven rabbits of Intrude will be spread across several Brookfield properties on Bunker Hill and at the FIGat7th retail center in downtown Los Angeles from June 5 – June 11.

Locations:

  • FIGat7th
735 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017
  • Bank of America Plaza
333 S. Hope Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071
