Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

Are your children animal lovers? If so, don’t miss this opportunity! Join the good folks at the John C. Fremont Library and read books to dogs. BARK is an all-volunteer program that encourages children to increase their reading skills and self-confidence by reading aloud to certified therapy dogs. Studies show that reading to these dogs actually leads to improvement in reading skills! Younger children may also attend. We’ll be honoring Paulette Light & Melanie Staggs, Tony Molina, and Parsons Corp. Melanie and Paulette have run Big Sunday’s monthly food drive, The End of the Month Club, since its inception, and they have also overseen the massive food collection and distribution we’ve done for the past few years at Thanksgiving. They have done an amazing job nurturing and building this extremely popular and successful program, as well as this great and growing Thanksgiving tradition. Tony Molina is a wonderful gentleman who works at NBC-Universal in the transportation department, and has helped Big Sunday move about a zillion pounds of stuff over many years, as well as run all kinds of projects for us, rehabbing schools and shelters. We’ve happily worked with Parsons Corp. on all kinds of terrific and impactful service projects, from San Diego to San Francisco.
We’re excited by the enthusiastic reception for this event and for our very deserving honorees.

Once a month, volunteers and community partners come together at the Garden School Foundation’s 24th Street School Garden to have some fun in the sun, enjoy delicious, garden-fresh snacks, and get vital work done that keeps their living classrooms beautiful for the kids they serve. They also have a cooking or gardening workshop during each workday, where volunteers can learn & get inspired about food, from seed to table.

On March 12 from 9 am – 12 pm, the good folks at I Love A Clean San Diego will be cleaning up the San Diego River as part of San Diego River Park Foundation’s River Kids Discovery Days. Come out and join them as they clean up litter from this important waterway! This is a great opportunity to bring out the kids and teach them about this 50-mile long river right in the heart of San Diego! Register today! Big Sunday’s harbor cruises are awesome! We host a big group of underserved and deserving folks on a special cruise through San Pedro Harbor. Many of these nice people have never been on a boat before! We need volunteers to host, be friendly, hand our donuts (of course!), enjoy one another and enjoy the ride.
