We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

The Khalsa Care Foundation invites you to an afternoon fill of free fun for the entire family, including giveaways, free games, food and an awesome raffle. The KCF giveaway, sponsored by the Sikh Community of Los Angeles, will include food bags, winter warmth items (i.e. blankets, jackets, socks, hygiene kits, gloves and beanies) and toys (basketballs, soccer balls and kid’s toys). Don’t miss activities such as face painting, arts & crafts and henna booths, a bouncy house and so much more and enjoy pizza, popcorn, cotton candy and Subway sandwiches. For years, Big Sunday Weekend—an incredible three-day festival of helping each May—has been our signature (and largest) event. In 2015, thousands of volunteers turned out—some as individuals, others with their families, still others as part of a class, church, synagogue, mosque, business or club—to lend a hand at hundreds of different projects from San Diego to San Francisco, making Big Sunday Weekend one of the largest regional community service events in America. In 2016, Big Sunday Weekend is expanding to A Month of Big Sundays. After 17 years, we’ve simply grown too big to contain everything in one weekend.
In May 2016, Big Sunday is hosting and/or sponsoring special events every single day of the month. Now we can take on even bigger projects, reach more people, make new alliances, and more easily fit in with everyone’s (and every organization’s) busy schedules. We’ll still have all kinds of events for every kind of passion and every type of talent. If you are at a school, faith group or business making your 2016 calendar now, please set aside any day during May 2016 and know that we’ll find a project that’s both impactful and fun for you to do. If you want to host a project, please select any day during May. Of course, we’ll still be bringing people together from all walks of life in the name of making the world a better place. LA Makerspace is a community-based organization whose mission is to foster innovation among Angelenos by offering increased access to new opportunities in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics).
Program Description: LA Makerspace (LAM) seeks a creative, dynamic instructor with a strong maker background to teach Minecraft workshops for kids, teens, and adults. In this role, you will be responsible for facilitating workshops in public libraries, schools, and private settings based on curriculum developed by LA Makerspace. Working within the framework of this curriculum, instructors are encouraged to customize the workshops to suit their instructional styles and the needs of the workshop participants.
Volunteer Role & Responsibilities: Facilitate Minecraft workshops in locations throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Most workshops are provided through the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) system and take place at LAPL branches throughout the city. They also provide occasional workshops for school groups or special events. Coordinate with LAM staff to order and deliver supplies and tools to workshop sites.
Create a safe and fun learning environment for participants, including teaching safety skills for materials and equipment. Guide Minecraft Assistant(s) in setup and how to manage/handle situations that may arise. Administer program evaluations at the end of each workshop. Participate in research and curriculum development projects.
Time Commitment: Variable hours
Requirements: Technical knowledge about Minecraft and multiplayer servers. Familiarity with the online Minecraft community. Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and players’ questions/challenges during a session. Ability to multitask and juggle questions in a hectic, free play environment. Creative approach to gaming aligned with maker ideals. Strong interest and background in maker pedagogy; ability to teach maker learning styles to beginners. Commitment to ongoing skill development.

Help the National Council for Jewish Women LA prepare for their Annual Clothing Giveaway by sorting and organizing over 75,000 pieces of clothing and children's books to give away to 3,000 in-need and at-risk individuals in our community. Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age. Community service credit/certificates will be given to all students.

Please note there are TWO volunteer shifts: 6:45 am-10:00 am and 9:45 am-1:15 pm. You are welcome to come for one or stay for both!
READING TO KIDS: January 14th Reading Clubs
Reading to Kids organizes monthly reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at eight downtown Los Angeles elementary schools. The reading clubs run from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Pairs of volunteer readers read aloud to small groups of students from the elementary school (typically between 4 and 6 children per group) in a fun environment. Teachers at the elementary school provide supervision and guidance throughout the morning.

Olive Crest presents the “Shimmer and Share: Show That You Care” Dress Drive March 13 – April 7. The public is encouraged to donate a bridesmaid dress, cocktail dress or evening gown to Olive Crest to give every girl in their community a chance to go to her prom feeling like a princess. All dress donations will benefit at-risk teens and youth. Please drop off items Monday through Friday from 9 am – 5 pm at 17800 Woodruff Avenue, Bellflower, CA 90706. The Festival of Books began in 1996 with a simple goal: Bring together the people who create books and the people who love to read them. The Festival was an immediate success and has become Southern California's major literary event. The 2017 Festival will be held on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23 at the University of Southern California and they would love to have you join as a volunteer.
Last year over 150,000 people attended the Festival, which featured more than a hundred ticketed author events, children’s storytelling, poetry readings, book signings and more than 400 exhibitor booths. The Festival’s success has been due in part to the generous participation of volunteers who welcomed attendees, assisted with registration, staffed author events, supervised book signings and much more.
Time Commitment: Volunteers sign up for one or more 3-4 hour shifts on one or both days.
Requirements:
• The majority of volunteer activities require being on your feet for most of your shift.
• Please wear comfortable shoes and khaki or beige pants or shorts.
• Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. (You cannot bring children under the age of 18 with you during your shift. )
Benefits: Volunteers will receive free parking, shuttle service from the parking lot and lunch. Volunteer t-shirts will be provided to wear and keep after the event.
*Please sign up as soon as possible as space fills up quickly and the final deadline for pre-registering as a volunteer is April 5, 2017.

The Giveaway is a single-day event that provides free, gently used clothing to more than 2,000 women, men, and children at the start of the holiday season.
We need 120 volunteers to help sort clothing, greet our guests, keep our giveaway tables freshly and fully stocked, and assist with event cleanup. Breakfast and lunch are provided for volunteers.
The Clothing Giveaway takes place at our headquarters in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles:

Parking restrictions in the area are eased for the event.
Volunteers must be at least 17 years-old. Community service credit/certificates will be given to all students.
