Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

STEWARDS AND JR. STEWARDS HABITAT RESTORATION
The Bolsa Chica Land Trust Stewards and Jr. Stewards meet twice each month – the first Sunday and third Saturday – to restore native habitat at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Take part at 9 am (till noon). Meet at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve North Parking Lot (3842 Warner Ave., Huntington Beach, CA).
Come plant and water native plants, remove non-native plants, pick up trash and other maintenance tasks. Help the Bolsa Chica Land Trust heal our local environment! Please “dress for mess” with long pants and closed toe shoes (like sneakers) and plenty of sunscreen. That’s it! You’ll be taken care of from there with plenty of instructions, tools and equipment, information about the ecosystem, and water and snacks. All are welcome, but please note, there is limited access for those with physical disabilities. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy holds a regularly scheduled service day on the second Sunday and last Saturday of each month from 9 am to 12 pm at the North parking lot outside of the interpretive center. This service day is a great chance for the general public to get their hands dirty and help restore the wetlands. On these days, volunteers participate in a few different activities that benefit the health of the wetlands. Trash removal from the marsh and dune habitats, invasive plant removal and native plant planting and propagation all contribute to the health of these increasingly rare coastal habitats.

New! Gardening calss for children. Everyone knows kids who grow broccoli eat broccoli. You dont want to miss this! Ages 6-12 years old. The classes will teach : Intro to Soil, Amending a Bed, Tool Safety, Plant Selection, and Seed Starting.
Registration must be completed through Beverly Hills Community Services Department. You will be confirmed registration once payment is made. No onsite registration on day of class.
We are hosting a turnover day in the garden, this coming Sunday, Septmeber 9th, from 10-noon. We will supply all the tools, we’re going to compost our old summer crops and add in soil amendments to prepare for fall vegetables. We could use around 10 volunteers. The address is 905 Loma Vista Drive: enter off of Doheny Road around 100 feet west of Loma Vista: you will see an open gate, the greenhouse, and signs for the garden.
New street trees are coming to West Long Beach in a tree planting event to remember a very special neighborhood leader, Sandra Johnson.

Friends of Sandra Johnson and Bixby New Wave District, Soka Gakkai International-USA (SGI-USA) are committed to help plant, water and care for these 100 new street trees for their first year. Come help plant the trees!
Sandra Johnson was the first African-American woman to work as a Pipefitter at the Long Beach Naval Ship Yard! She also worked as a Library Clerk at the Long Beach Main Library. Sandra was active in the Windward Village Home Owners Association in West Long Beach and served as their Vice President and Newsletter Editor and she was active in the West Long Beach Association. Sandra Johnson graduated from the Neighborhood Leadership Program (NLP) Class of 2009. Sandra was a Master Gardener and used her knowledge of plants to help create community gardens, including a community garden at a vacant lot on Pacific Avenue in the Wrigley Village business district. Sandra also helped with taking care of Buddist senior citizens and helped guide them to access social services, she also assisted many people who were homeless to access social services and housing resources.
The Port of Long Beach and CAL FIRE have provided funding to plant 10,000 trees in Long Beach neighborhoods through 2022. Residents, businesses and community groups partner with Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau to provide volunteers at the tree planting events.
Public Works surveyed the neighborhood for tree planting locations and Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau staff mailed letters to the property owners of all the adjacent sites to notify them that trees will be installed and to provide them with an opportunity to decline them.
Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau staff will deliver all the trees and tools on planting day.
