Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar

We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

Big Queen BingoDon’t miss the Feb. 6 Big Queen Bingo Charity Fundraiser for No Limits for Deaf and Hard-of-hearing Children.  There is a suggested donation: $20 to play all rounds.  Seating begins at 6 pm and games start at 7 pm.  Come out and support a great cause!

Volunteer: The Jewish Federation of Greater LA @ Varied locations (see website)

On Sunday, February 26, you can make a difference in the Jewish community in five meaningful ways and at locations throughout Los Angeles when you volunteer as part of Federation's Community Service Day. Choose from these ways to give back — and feel great about making time to make a difference:

  • Day of Good Deeds — At Aegis of Granada Hills, you can paint canvases with the senior residents at this family-friendly event. No art skills required — just the desire to brighten a senior's day.
  • Beit T’Shuvah — Join the residents of Beit T’Shuvah in feeding the homeless. In the morning, you can make sandwiches and burritos for the homeless with Beit T’Shuvah residents. In the afternoon, you can help distribute.
  • Ronald McDonald House — Join the members of YALA, ages 25-40, to make meals for resident families so they can relax and spend time with their hospitalized children.
  • Aviva Family and Children’s Services — Participate in arts and crafts with, and get to know at-risk teenage girls staying at the Aviva Center. (Volunteers must be 18 or older.)
  • Jewish Community Inclusion Festival for JDAIM — Celebrate Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month by helping those with special needs and their families enjoy a day of fun. (Volunteers must be 13 or older.)

Once you sign up, encourage your friends and family to join you. All are welcome! The more who fundraise, the greater the impact. Together, powered by love, the Autism Speaks Walk aims to enhance the lives of people with autism today and create a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.

Start a Team: Register as a Team Captain, then encourage your friends and family to join your team and fundraise.

Join a Team: Choose this option to join a team that has already been created by a Team Captain.

Register as an Individual: Save your place now. You can always join a team later. If you would like to join a team, but can’t find one to join, email familyservices@autismspeaks.org and they’ll find a friendly team for you.

School Beautification: Mayall Academy of Arts and Technology @ Mayall Academy of Arts and Technology

On Saturday, April 29, Mayall Academy of Arts and Technology needs a few hardworking volunteers to pitch in on various tasks (i.e. painting, clean-up and gardening) and the school’s beautification day. Mayall Academy of Arts and Technology is a Technology Magnet and low-income school located in North Hills with a large population of deaf and hard-of-hearing students and second language learners.  To lend a hand, please contact Principal Linda Kim at lkim5@lausd.net.

7th Annual Poker Tourney & Casino Lounge Fundraiser @ Killer Shrimp Restaurant & Bar

MoBS Open House / 10K in May Food Drive @ Big Sunday

During the month of May, Big Sunday is hosting a massive food drive —10K in May — in an effort to collect 10,000 units of food for the hungry!  Feel free to donate unexpired, nonperishable food items at Big Sunday during our office hours M – F, 9 am – 5 pm.

On May 31 from 10 am – 5 pm, join us for our "A Month of Big Sundays" day-long open house, which will feature our biggest End of the Month Club ever.  Help sort, pack and distribute all the food donated during the month and any other final donations.  Feel free to help jump-start our beach towel collection for June.  Volunteers can look forward to great food, good music, fantastic company and lots of ideas on how you can be involved in upcoming months! Food will be sorted in the morning and our nonprofit friends will pick up their items in the afternoon.  Sign up for the May 31 End of the Month Club project here.

A Special Evening with Jay Leno & Friends @ Geffen Playhouse

Jay Leno returns to the Geffen Playhouse for a one-night-only show to benefit NO LIMITS for deaf children and the Geffen Playhouse’s Education and Community Engagement programs.

A Special Evening with Jay Leno and Friends will take place on Monday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse.

Kathy Buckley, “America’s First Hearing Impaired Comedienne,” will host the event.
