Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar

We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

Fiesta de la Huerta @ 24th Street Elementary (GSF's 2 acres of organic, edible gardens)

Fiesta de la HuertaEach year, the Garden School Foundation invites its community of supporters, friends and families into the garden for Fiesta de la Huerta, a fun family festival and fundraiser that celebrates their mission and all that the garden has to offer. Guests explore and adventure in the beautiful gardens, have fun with garden activities and arts and crafts, learn from the pros with DIY and cooking classes, enjoy lunch from amazing restaurants — and much, much more!

Guests will enjoy:

  • Professional DIY Workshops from Maker’s Mess, Kings Roost, the Cool School, Nora Floral Studio, Best Bees and more
  • A lesson in Cooking from the Garden with renowned LA chef Ricardo Zarate
  • Family-friendly Yoga classes from Yogaworks
  • Make-your-own Bike-blender smoothies
  • Face painting and Photo Booth!
  • Garden activities like plant potting, a sack race, farmers market and compost petting zoo
  • Arts and Crafts like pressed flower art and fairy houses
  • Lunch from amazing restaurants like Salts’s Cure, Cava, sweetgreen, Peddlars Creamery, Yalla, Jennie Cooks, Califia Farms- and more!

Tickets (5 ticket minimum) are $5 each and proceeds will go towards the support of GSF's Seed-to-Table program. Tickets will be available at the door, but advance purchase is advised, as attendance will be limited.

MEND Annual Parking Lot Fundraiser
Jul 9 – Jul 10 all-day

Join our friends at MEND (Meet Every Need with Dignity) for their annual fundraiser benefitting MEND’s programs. This special event culminates just after MEND’s huge donation drive from June 9 – July 8, which includes donations of furniture; house ware and decorative items; electronics; toys and jewelry that are in good-to-excellent condition for MEND’s clients.

A Celebration of Music @ Nueva Vision Community School

Don't miss Nueva Vision Community School's Fundraiser Event on July 22 at 7 pm!  This special affair will help the school cover operational costs for important music programs for kids and teens from low-income families in the San Fernando Valley.  The program not only offers free music (piano and guitar) lessons to these students, but it also covers the costs of lesson books, materials, instruments and administrative expenses.  

The event will feature operatic soprano and Nueva Vision Community School voice teacher Julie Anne Bermel.

In addition to the special event, the good folks at Nueva Vision Community School are also in search of a volunteer to aid the organization in marketing to make more of an impact on friends and potential donors.  Volunteers with expertise in the areas of website and social media marketing are especially needed.

Autry Explorers: The Gift of Giving @ Autry Museum of the American West

Explore the hidden stories of Los Angeles families from the 1890s and learn how generosity has influenced our city. Through an Autry Explorer gift exchange, each Explorer will have the opportunity to create a unique gift that allows their generosity to flourish beyond the Autry. Younger Explorers can enjoy a special activity area with books, puzzles, and toys.

Presented in partnership with the Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet School’s 8th-grade class.

As the Vice President of Global Creative Marketing at Netflix, Stephen Bruno oversees the global positioning and creative execution for all of Netflix Originals marketing campaigns. This encompasses series (e.g. Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Narcos, Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why), documentaries (e.g. Making a Murderer, 13th, Amanda Knox, Chef’s Table), comedy specials (e.g. Dave Chappelle, Sarah Silverman, Louis CK) and feature films (e.g. Beasts of No Nation, Okja, War Machine, Bright). He arrived at Netflix in January 2015 after relocating to Los Angeles from New York City.  

A veteran entertainment marketing executive, Stephen had previously been with The Weinstein Company and Miramax Films for a combined total of over 11 years.  Most recently as the President of Marketing, Stephen successfully supervised the execution of theatrical releases including Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook, Lee Daniel’s The Butler, The Artist, and Fruitvale Station.Between his two tours at The Weinstein Company, Stephen worked at HBO as a Director of Consumer Marketing. He helped to generate record ratings for returning seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Eastbound and Down.  

Stephen Bruno graduated from Boston University and currently lives in Santa Monica with his wife, Melissa, and three young children: Rex, Lila, and Greta. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Stephen is a lifelong Eagles fan, and he prefers his cheesesteaks from Jim’s.
