Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar

We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.

After School Homework Club Volunteer Opportunity
Aug 30 – Aug 31 all-day

The National Council of Jewish Women is a volunteer organization that has been at the forefront of social change for over a century. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW courageously takes a progressive stance on issues such as child welfare, women’s rights, and reproductive freedom.

Project Description: The NCJW/LA After School Homework Club (ASHC) fosters a sense of personal responsibility for success and builds self-esteem and confidence in the student's ability to succeed. Sometimes volunteers are the only adults available to work with these children on their homework.

Volunteer Role & Responsibilities: You can help provide children with an educational and safe environment to encourage self-motivated homework completion! NCJW collaborates with school staff to make sure that students are getting the proper help and support from volunteers and their teachers. Volunteers work one-on-one or with small groups of students in grades 1 through 8.

If you are excited about working with kids, have patience and understanding for students who may be struggling in different subject areas, and a warm enthusiasm, this is the right role for you. NCJW is always looking for bilingual volunteers, primarily in Spanish, Farsi or Russian. They welcome volunteers of all backgrounds who are not Jewish, women, or Jewish women!

Requirements: Volunteers will need to submit a Volunteer Application as well as a LiveScan fingerprint submission to the California Dept of Justice. Volunteers will also need to submit a TB test or clear chest x-ray taken within the past two years. Training will be given on-site during Homework Club hours.

Time Commitment: Tuesdays from 2-4 pm and Thursdays from 2:45-4 pm at two elementary schools in the West Hollywood areas. Volunteers are asked to commit weekly to at least one day a week for the school year, September to June.

Benefits: Volunteers have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping youth receive academic assistance and support that they may not otherwise receive outside the classroom.

"After School programs can help children develop greater confidence in their academic abilities and a greater interest in school, both of which have been shown to lead to improved school attendance and completion rates." – The US Dept of Education

Volunteer: Alive & Running 5k Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention
Sep 25 @ 6:30 am – 11:00 am

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services is holding the 18th Annual Alive & Running 5k Walk/Run for Suicide Prevention on Sunday, September 25th, and they are currently looking for volunteers and participants.

Alive and Running is a 5K Walk/Run to raise funds and awareness for Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services’ Suicide Prevention Center (SPC). Their SPC was founded in 1958, and provides critical services to people who are contemplating suicide and those affected by the suicide of a loved one.

Proceeds from the event are used to fund vital programming at the Suicide Prevention Center, which has one of the nation’s few 24/7 Spanish/English crisis lines and is one of only three that answers calls for the National Disaster Distress Helpline. The Center trains more than 20,000 people a year, participates in cutting-edge research and runs support groups replicated around the world for people who have thought about, attempted or lost someone to suicide.

Volunteer duties include:

•   T-shirt distribution
•    Parking lot attendants
•    Design “Finish Line” posters
•    Water distribution
•    Award distribution
•    Finish line cheerleaders
•    Provide volunteer station relief
•    High School Team assistance
•    Set-up/Clean-up

Alive and Running will take place near LAX, on 88th Street and La Tijera Boulevard. Volunteers are asked to be at the event from 6:30am to 11am.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Hillary Peregrina at 310-751-5455 or DevTemp@didihirsch.org.

NOTE: All volunteers welcome; those 14 years old and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
