We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

The League of Women Voters of Los Angeles is celebrating its 95th anniversary with an extraordinary celebration and fundraiser on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at the Pacific Design Center. The morning begins with a cocktail reception followed by a brief awards presentation and “living room” conversation with the honorees, moderated by award-winning actress Monica Horan Rosenthal of Everybody Loves Raymond. Our anniversary event concludes with a special screening of Focus Features’ new film SUFFRAGETTE, starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Meryl Streep. Director Sarah Gavron and screenwriter Abi Morgan will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A after the screening.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan grassroots volunteer organization, was born in 1920 when fearless women fought for and finally attained the right to vote. Originally designed to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters and to nurture civic leaders, today the League continues to engage and empower diverse voices to participate in our democracy, defend and expand voting rights, and advocate for better laws and public policy. The League never supports or opposes any political party or candidate.
SUFFRAGETTE, directed by Sarah Gavron from a script written by Abi Morgan, is the first feature film to tell the story of the battle for women’s voting rights. Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter, and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, lead the cast of the moving and powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early 20th-century Britain. It is a film that will empower all who are striving for equal rights in our own day and age. SUFFRAGETTE, MPAA-rated “PG-13”, also stars Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, and Natalie Press.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death for men and women combined, but it is preventable, treatable and beatable if caught at an early stage. During CRC Awareness Month in March, the American Cancer Society is training volunteers to go out and speak in the community about the importance of screening, risk factors, and ACS's 80% By 2018 initiative to increase screening rates to reduce incidence and mortality rates. No medical background is necessary and volunteers will receive a PowerPoint presentation and samples of materials that are available for speakers to distribute. Examples of speaking opportunities are: community health fairs, service club meetings, church groups, senior centers, etc. If you are interested in making a difference in your community, please join ACS and learn more about how you can get involved! Poets Jazz House is a Spoken Word & Music Lounge where spilling your heart is an art and searching your soul is mandatory to get in the door and the cover charge is always free. Don't miss the California Friendly Landscape Training Class {En Español} on December 8 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. *Please note that this event is conducted entirely in Spanish.
Volunteers will help set-up and decorate, escort seniors, help manage lines, serve dinner, act as wait staff, hand out thank you gifts, etc. Volunteers will need to be able to be on their feet and enjoying interacting with others. Around 200 attendees are expected at this event and they'll really need some help to pull off this event! Participants must be high school age or above, please!
