Conference: “Sistahs, Sexuality, and Mental Health Wellbeing” @ Department of Water and Power
Apr 28 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Take part “Sistahs, Sexuality, and Mental Health Wellbeing,” a conference that will take place on Friday, April 28th 2017, from 10 am – 2 pm at the Department of Water and Power located at 4030 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles. This project emerged out of partnerships between UCLA, Healthy African American Families (HAAF), Los Angeles Women’s Collaborative on HIV/AIDS, Fox Hills Ladera Healthy Family Association, Oasis Clinic, and I Choose Life in efforts to address the increase in sexually transmitted infections and diseases (STIs/STDs) that are occurring among African American women aged 50+.

The series of dialogue groups (4 groups of 10-12 African American women aged 50+) to discuss topics about sexual health practices and mental health wellbeing as it pertains to aging has been completed.  Responses from the groups were transcribed and the data was analyzed to identify specific themes that emerged that are potential areas of attention and intervention.  A majority of the women identified difficulty with broaching conversations about sexual health with their physicians and partners and mental health issues as reasons for why older women in our community may engage in risky sexual practices.

The purpose of this conference is to invite you as well as other members of the community to discuss the research findings from these groups as well engage in a conversation about some next steps for community prevention and intervention.  A dynamic panel of speakers have been gathered, including Yolanda Whittington, LCSW (Department of Mental Health), Claudia Spears, RN (Holman Methodist Church), and Nola Thomas, MA who have specific expertise on this topic.  Dr. Velma Union (Founder of One-Light International) will moderate the panel session. Please attend!

The Hollywood Hike to End Homelessness @ Griffith Park, Boy Scout Trail
Mar 21 @ 8:00 am

Now that you’ve participated in the 2020 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, take the next step in helping address the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles County by joining the 3rd Annual Hollywood Hike to End Homelessness.

60,000 of our neighbors fall asleep unsheltered, alone, and isolated every single night in Los Angeles County. For many of our neighbors, challenges are layered. Mental and physical challenges, a fundamental lack of resources, and the social stigma of homelessness create an environment of indescribable loneliness, trauma, and pain many of us cannot begin to comprehend.

For the better part of a decade, The Center has provided a holistic and trauma-informed approach to ending isolation and homelessness. Offering unique Wellness, Health, Outreach & Housing, and Community Support Programs, they work every day to break down barriers to entry for our homeless neighbors. By doing so, we help build a path toward wellness and housing.

On March 21st, they will host the 3rd Annual Hike to End Homelessness to raise vital funds for The Center’s Community Wellness Program that serves thousands of vulnerable individuals living unhoused on the streets in our neighborhood. With these resources, together, they will give their participants access to community programming and connections to healthcare, mental healthcare, and housing.

This unique event is anything but the typical fundraising experience. Bringing together hundreds of Angelenos hiking in solidarity, this hike is a powerful display of our commitment toward ending homelessness in our community.
