Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.
If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.
For years, Big Sunday Weekend—an incredible three-day festival of helping each May—has been our signature (and largest) event. In 2015, thousands of volunteers turned out—some as individuals, others with their families, still others as part of a class, church, synagogue, mosque, business or club—to lend a hand at hundreds of different projects from San Diego to San Francisco, making Big Sunday Weekend one of the largest regional community service events in America. In 2016, Big Sunday Weekend is expanding to A Month of Big Sundays. After 17 years, we’ve simply grown too big to contain everything in one weekend.
In May 2016, Big Sunday is hosting and/or sponsoring special events every single day of the month. Now we can take on even bigger projects, reach more people, make new alliances, and more easily fit in with everyone’s (and every organization’s) busy schedules. We’ll still have all kinds of events for every kind of passion and every type of talent. If you are at a school, faith group or business making your 2016 calendar now, please set aside any day during May 2016 and know that we’ll find a project that’s both impactful and fun for you to do. If you want to host a project, please select any day during May. Of course, we’ll still be bringing people together from all walks of life in the name of making the world a better place. For many people, A Month of Big Sundays (formerly Big Sunday Weekend) is just the beginning of an involvement that continues throughout the year. In the meantime, if you have any questions or suggestions, please visit http://mobs.bigsunday.org/.
Join us for our first-ever Mother’s Day Party! It will be a great time for anyone who is a mom, has a mom, or knows a mom. We’ll be making cards and gifts for moms who are shut-ins and doing special collections for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and m2m (Mother 2 Mother) which helps women with AIDS in Africa. We’ll also be collecting new and gently used baby clothes for an orphanage in Central America. All ages are welcome. For more info, please email beenish@bigsunday.org. To participate in this special event, click HERE.
Help Big Sunday send kids back to school in style as we sort, count and pack all kinds of requested items for kids at a bunch of different low-income schools in Los Angeles and Long Beach during our 7th Annual Back-to-School Drive & Community Dinner. The sorting will be followed by a delicious and fun community dinner. We need donors and volunteers. For more info, please contact on items we are collecting or to RSVP, please click HERE.
Join us for Big Sunday’s 3rd Annual Books n’ Brunch fall book collection. By special request, we’re collecting all kinds of new and gently used books for all kinds of grateful nonprofits. Help us sort and box the books, then stick around as we all enjoy a delicious and friendly brunch! For more info or to sign up to help, please click HERE.
There are lots of talented musicians in the Big Sunday community who have helped Big Sunday projects in all kinds of important ways. For the first time, Big Sunday is hosting a special night of music featuring a few of these musicians including: George Hill (New Directions Veteran Choir); The Hollywood Forever Bluegrass Band (Mark Drop, "Utah Bob" Rosenfield, Maddie Eaton, Ulrich Sinn and Brian Mastalski); Michelle Mayne-Graves (also from the New Directions Veteran Choir); Rob Seals & Co.; Sophie Strauss and, alas, David Levinson. Event admission is free; ages 21 and up; beer and wine will be served. Please RSVP to beenish@bigsunday.org. Donations of new pairs of socks are greatly appreciated and will benefit Big Sunday veteran Adam B.’s sock drive for the homeless.
Each year people from all walks of life join us to eat, sing (with a live band!) and enjoy the holidays. As always, our guests of honor are the incredible kids from Ability First and the amazing folks from Sunset Hall. We’re also hosting other friends with struggles large and small.
Volunteers are needed to spread some holiday cheer to our invited guests. There will be singing (good singing not necessary — trust us) (and no, you don’t have to sing if you don’t want to). We’ll deck the halls and light a menorah, too. Of course, there will be loads of arts & crafts and delicious holiday treats. We’ll also be collecting toys for kids, winter coats for kids and adults and non-perishable food items for our End of the Month Club. To sign up today, click HERE!
At Big Sunday, we’re amazed by how many people simply don’t have enough clothes. So, once again, we’ll be collecting all kinds of clothing for all kinds of disadvantaged and grateful people. Volunteers are needed to count, sort, and fold the donations. We’ll also all be enjoying breakfast together and, once again, everyone is invited to meet someone new and participate in our memorable Something in Common photo project.
We like to think that this is in the spirit of Dr. King and something he’d have enjoyed.

Can you donate clothes?
Great! You can drop off new and gently-used clothes at Big Sunday Monday – Friday from 9 am – 5 pm or you can drop off clothes on the morning of the event, if you plan to attend. We need all kinds of clothes, all sizes. Only new socks and underwear, please.
Big Sunday wants to ensure no one is forgotten on Valentine’s Day, so we’re gathering volunteers to make cards and gift bags for thousands of shut-ins and people who are ailing or facing a tough time. Participants will also enjoy a terrific community dinner and, a raucous game of bingo. All ages are welcome!
Big Sunday is also collecting unexpired, non-perishable food items for our friends at Alexandria House, a non-profit transitional residence and house of hospitality providing safe and supportive housing for women and children in the process of moving from emergency shelter to permanent housing.
We are collecting pasta and sauce, but cleaning out your cupboards is great. Soups, canned meats, cereal, beans, jelly and peanut butter are always winners too.
BTW: Would you or your group be interested in being a sponsor of this event?
(Sponsorships start at $1000 and allow us to keep all our programs free!) Contact adam@bigsunday.org.

On May 31 from 10 am – 5 pm, join us for our "A Month of Big Sundays" day-long open house, which will feature our biggest End of the Month Club ever. Help sort, pack and distribute all the food donated during the month and any other final donations. Feel free to help jump-start our beach towel collection for June. Volunteers can look forward to great food, good music, fantastic company and lots of ideas on how you can be involved in upcoming months! Food will be sorted in the morning and our nonprofit friends will pick up their items in the afternoon. Sign up for the May 31 End of the Month Club project here.
