Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar

We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.

Catholic Charities Golf Fundraiser @ Skylinks at Long Beach Golf Course
Oct 5 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

On Friday, October 5th, 2018, the San Pedro Region of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. will be hosting its 14th Annual “Evening with Angels” fundraising dinner at The Skylinks Golf Coursein Long Beach.  All are welcome to this event to help raise funds in order to create new programs that will help end or prevent families and individuals from being homeless.

This event will feature special guest (City Officials, Celebrities, and etc), entertainment, a three-course meal, and a silent auction. In addition, an awards recognigtion to courageous leaders committed to making a difference to those who are in need, regardless of political, religious or geographic boundaries.

100% of all proceeds from the event provide direct and critical support for the San Pedro Region’s programs, through which we seek to provide help and foster hope for all people in need throughout the area. Catholic Charities is committed to manifesting Christ's spirit by collaborating with diverse communities, providing services to the poor and vulnerable, promoting human dignity and advocating for social justice.

Catholic Charities San Pedro Region has two shelters:

-Project Achieve, a 59 bed emergency shelter serving adults who do not have children. Sixteen beds are allocated at any point in time for services to women. Last year, 179 women were provided up to 90 days of shelter. Project Achieve provides care without cost to the client so that the client might save whatever income he or she might have toward future rents. The shelter houses up to 59 residents a night and has been consistently full due to the ongoing economic crisis. The shelter is designed to serve all sub-populations including chronically homeless, mentally ill, and substance abusers.  The ultimate goal of the Project Achieve shelter program is for the clients to access housing.

-Elizabeth Ann Seton Residence that shelters 14 homeless families. The primary purpose of EASR is to move families from the crisis of being homeless to safe and stable housing. Ordinarily those who follow their case plan have a success rate of about 80% in achieving this goal. Since its inception, EASR has helped more than 9,200 persons with shelter. The case manager provides assistance, support, and referrals to other resources which aid clients in achieving their goals. Clients meet with the case manager and progress is reviewed weekly or more frequently, if needed. After clients leave the shelter, they are followed for up to six months to ensure they remain stable

As well as three community centers

-Mahar House: Located in Long Beach, Mahar provides after school programs for low income children in grades 4th-6th. Mahar holds community meetings and daily activities for the children. Mahar's goal is to provide positive role models and examples for children at a vulnerable age to prohibit them from turning to gangs, violence, and unsafe environments.

-Long Beach Community Center: Provides emergency food assistance, utility and rental assistance, baby items, clothing, hygiene items, case management, information and referrals for job training, childcare, substance abuse agencies, and shelters to the community.

-Pico Rivera Community Center: Provides emergency food assistance, utility and rental assistance, baby items, clothing, hygiene items, case management, information and referrals for job training, childcare, substance abuse agencies, and shelters to the community.

We welcome any donations that you are able to provide, including packages or merchandise to help reach our goal. In addition, we welcome City Oficials, Humanitarians, Public Figures or Performers to grace us with thier gifts to help those in need.

Best Friends Animal Society’s Strut Your Mutt @ Exposition Park
Oct 26 @ 7:30 am – 11:30 am

Best Friends Animal Society’s Strut Your Mutt is a series of charity dog walks that bring entire communities together to raise money to help save the lives of homeless pets.

This is much more then a fundraising walk. Strut Your Mutt is a fun-filled festival where four-, three- and two-legged participants of all ages can take part in activities like doggie yoga, pet portraits, music, contests and more.

In 2018, at the many events across the country, as well as online, participants came together to show their support for the animals. Together, more than $2.3 million was raised.
