Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

Public Program United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
Nazis used radio; today’s extremists use social media. Then as now, new technology provides extremists with unchecked ability to spread hate and prey upon disenfranchised audiences to realize their deadly agenda. This event will explore the tension between protecting free speech and limiting incendiary propaganda. What responsibility do technology companies, governments, and individuals have to limit uses of technology to keep our world safe?

Help the National Council for Jewish Women LA prepare for their Annual Clothing Giveaway by sorting and organizing over 75,000 pieces of clothing and children's books to give away to 3,000 in-need and at-risk individuals in our community. Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age. Community service credit/certificates will be given to all students.

Join TREE MUSKETEERS Tree Team on Wednesdays to care for trees in El Segundo's urban forests!
Activities include watering, mulching, weeding, pruning and litter abatement. Tree Musketeers provides the tools and know-how, you just need to come ready to "dig in" to your community.

Join the LA Food Policy Council (LAFPC) to hear from food justice experts about building a vision for food equity in Los Angeles. Through collaborative discussions about food access disparities, LAFPC hopes to develop a policy platform that will inform the LA food movement for years to come.

The series returns to Occidental March 29 with Youth Movement: Mayors Aja Brown and Robert Garcia, featuring Brown, mayor of Compton since 2013, and Garcia, mayor of Long Beach since 2014. As two of the youngest (Brown is 34, Garcia 39) mayors in Southern California, they represent a new generation of political leadership in the region. They’ll discuss their own paths to election, the state of their cities and the opportunities and challenges of piloting cities in the shadow of giant Los Angeles. For Heal the Bay, every day is Earth Day, but in honor of the 47th annual worldwide observance on April 22, Heal the Bay is celebrating for a solid week!
Heal the Bay’s Nothin’ but Sand clean-up on Saturday, April 15, runs from 10 a.m. to noon on the north side of the Santa Monica Pier. All clean-up participants will be rewarded with free admission to the Aquarium, which opens at 11 a.m. that day.
On the following Saturday, April 22, special activities throughout the day will commemorate the official day to celebrate our planet, during the Aquarium’s regular hours of 12:30 to 5 pm. Make a biodegradable planter, enjoy a special Earth Day story time at 2 pm, or visit a wildlife station on the west end of the Pier. At 1 pm and 3 pm, join Heal the Bay for “Who Pollutes?”— an interactive lesson in keeping our waterways and ocean healthy. Best of all, admission to the Aquarium on Earth Day will be FREE courtesy of The Albright!

Join Food Forward and RESULTS for a day of discussion around food justice, access, and gleaning strategies. Keynote speakers include Robert Egger (LA Kitchen) and Rachel Sumekh (Swipe Out Hunger).

Join us the weekend of December 1 and 2, 2018 – RAIN OR SHINE!
The Giveaway is a single-day event that provides free, gently used clothing to more than 2,000 women, men, and children at the start of the holiday season.
We need 120 volunteers to help sort clothing, greet our guests, keep our giveaway tables freshly and fully stocked, and assist with event cleanup. Breakfast and lunch are provided for volunteers.
The Clothing Giveaway takes place at our headquarters in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles:

Parking restrictions in the area are eased for the event.
Volunteers must be at least 17 years-old. Community service credit/certificates will be given to all students.
