Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

For Heal the Bay, every day is Earth Day, but in honor of the 47th annual worldwide observance on April 22, Heal the Bay is celebrating for a solid week!
Heal the Bay’s Nothin’ but Sand clean-up on Saturday, April 15, runs from 10 a.m. to noon on the north side of the Santa Monica Pier. All clean-up participants will be rewarded with free admission to the Aquarium, which opens at 11 a.m. that day.
On the following Saturday, April 22, special activities throughout the day will commemorate the official day to celebrate our planet, during the Aquarium’s regular hours of 12:30 to 5 pm. Make a biodegradable planter, enjoy a special Earth Day story time at 2 pm, or visit a wildlife station on the west end of the Pier. At 1 pm and 3 pm, join Heal the Bay for “Who Pollutes?”— an interactive lesson in keeping our waterways and ocean healthy. Best of all, admission to the Aquarium on Earth Day will be FREE courtesy of The Albright!

Head over to the Downtown Burbank Arts Festival to experience more than 200 original fine artists and world famous animators, whose work is found among the highest grossing animated films of all time. Free and open to the public, the festival is a great opportunity to experience the creative process, mingle with artists, and browse more than 400 shops and restaurants in Downtown Burbank.
The Creative Talent Network (CTN) will present the CTN Road Trip, with top storytellers, illustrators, character designers, and storyboard artists from the international animation community. Offering a rare opportunity to purchase artwork and interact with top animation artists, CTN will also host Sketch FEVER, where participants can sketch costumed models. Create Now is hosting an arts festival on Saturday, May 13th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Venice Hope Park, located across the street from Create Now’s facility near STAPLES. Dozens of kids will perform in a Talent Show and earn prizes.
There will be a DJ, fun arts and crafts activities, face painting, balloon twisters, popular children's characters and giveaways for the disadvantaged families in the local neighborhood.
Come cheer on young performers, and then attend Create Now’s After-Party from 12:00-2:00 pm at their center where you can meet some of the youth and learn more about Create Now. Westside Children’s Center (WCC) exists to give at-risk children and children living in poverty the foundation they need to increase their life choices and lead fulfilling lives. For over 25 years, WCC has been providing thousands of at-risk children and their families with critical, high-quality early education programs (including comprehensive Early Head Start services), family strengthening interventions, foster care and adoption services, and a range of vital, integrated services, including educational assessments, disabilities screenings, nutrition, dental and vision screenings, and pediatric health consultations.
Make the Connection — VA’s leading national mental health awareness campaign — is coming to LA to film Veterans and their families to participate in a national campaign to help Veterans manage mental health challenges that affect their well-being and their daily lives. They can join more than 500 Veterans and family members who have participated in the Make the Connection campaign to spread the word about mental health and encourage Veterans to reach out for support.
Who: Any Veteran — of any age or branch of service (including National Guard and Reserve) — with or without his or her family
When: Friday, Feb. 23, and Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, for approximately two hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
What: On-camera, professionally filmed interview to talk about experiences with mental health challenges and recovery

Clear your calendar – It's going down!
We’re on a mission to bring STEAM to communities nationwide with the STEAM Carnival (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math). The goal of the event is to inspire more creative thinkers, and doers, through playful, meaningful, immersive experiences. STEAM Carnival champions the mindset that these multiple disciplines are seamlessly integrated into how people live, work, and play today.
The Hawthorne STEAM Carnival kicks off on May 19th, and you're invited to take part in the festivities. Come one, come all, bring a guest, and hang loose. This is going to be epic!
