Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.
If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.
NDVets Memorial Day 5K
We look for friendly, energetic volunteers to assist with our 5K run/walk. We need volunteers to help with everything from Check-In, staffing water stations, and cheering on walkers and runners along the course, to giving out medals at the finish line and cleaning up.
NDVets Annual Gala Dinner
For this event, we need focused and friendly volunteers to help with event registration and ushering.
Day of Service
Arrange a day when caring employees from your company or organization can come out to one of our many NDVets facilities and complete a volunteer project that includes jobs such as gardening, painting, cleaning, and assembling care packages.
Host a Fundraiser or Collection Drive
Add an opportunity for giving to your next company party or event by collecting donations for NDVets! Most donations are tax-deductible.
Lunches for our Welcome Center
Our Welcome Center is often the first stop for many of our veterans seeking help, and meals are much needed and appreciated! If your organization is interested in scheduling a day to donate bagged lunches for our veterans, please contact our volunteer coordinator at devvolunteer@ndvets.org.
Attend an NDVets event
When you support a New Directions for Veterans event, you directly support our mission and the veterans we serve. Take a look at our upcoming events to see what’s happening!
If you’d like to donate your time and talents to New Directions for Veterans
Please contact us, and we can discuss a volunteer opportunity that works for you! Call us at 310-914-4045 and ask for the Development Department, or email us at info@ndvets.org.
Every June, AHEAD With Horses Inc. holds their Annual Children’s Demonstration and Fun Day. This is a day when all of the children in our program can showcase all of the wonders they have accomplished while riding a horse and have their friends and family cheer them on as they receive their Outstanding Achievement Awards. These accomplishments can range from now being able to lift their head, sit, use their hands and arms, move legs, stand, walk, speak or other communication, focus, follow directions, etc. These might seem like simple tasks to you, but to these children and their families, they can be life changing!
In addition to our Children's Demonstration, we also have a BBQ, games, arts & crafts and a Silent Auction.
We will need lots of volunteers to help with set up, clean up, running the game booths and arts & crafts, helping with the silent auction, helping with the bbq, parking, and many other activities. If you and/or any friends or groups you are a part of can sign up for a shift or 2, we would be very grateful. We cannot put on this event all by ourselves, we need the help of all of you! Thank you for helping us out!
If you are able to volunteer, please take a look at our online sign up sheet and put your name down for any slots that you can fill.

Your volunteer work at “I Have a Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles (IHADLA) will make a difference in the lives of underprivileged youth in Los Angeles. Volunteers tutor, coach, read to our students (“Dreamers”), chaperone field trips, provide positive role modeling, and act as an all-around support. The staff will supervise all volunteers during the after-school program.
The IHADLA staff will hold an orientation session at the program site for prospective volunteers. Other than that, the only requirement is that volunteers arrive on time! To apply, please click on the “Apply Now” button to fill out an application, and we will contact you shortly.

A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a trained, dedicated and caring community volunteer, who is assigned to work one-on-one with a child in the foster care system. CASAs are sworn in by a dependency court judge to advocate for what is in the child’s best interest. With legal standing to fully investigate a child’s circumstances, CASAs make recommendations to the court regarding how the system and community can best serve and support the child. Our volunteers have the ability to broadly influence the life of a foster child by advocating across many important life issues, including permanent placement, health care, education, mental health and enrichment activities.
Our most significant accomplishments happen every day – when an overlooked opportunity is found, a service is secured or an adult connection is made that will help keep a child safe and give him or her an opportunity to succeed.
Regular volunteers commit to serving at The Center 1+ days a week in the capacity of participating in or leading groups, attending coffee hour, cleaning, or assisting with office work. Weekly shifts range from 1.5-8 hours per shift.
As an example one of our regular volunteers, Tim, leads a group called “Timspirations” in which he shows an array of inspiration videos from across the web. He then leads the group in a discussion on their reflections and anecdotes about the clips.
