We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles is looking for volunteers for their monthly screenings! NFMLA is a non-profit dedicated to supporting emerging indie talent by screening a diverse body of shorts and features each month.
Volunteers are needed for a Friday and Saturday once a month to help with set-up, reception, red carpet, ticketing, and breakdown. Their Family Mentorship Program matches a team of volunteer mentors from committed organizations to work directly with a family for 1-2 years. The Fulfillment Fund is a college access organization with a 39-year history of helping disadvantaged students graduate from high school and access college. One of its key services is mentoring. Recognized as one of the best in the state, the Fulfillment Fund’s Mentor Program provides guidance from adult role models to students whose life circumstances challenge their opportunities for success. Each year the Fulfillment Fund Mentor Program shapes the lives of hundreds of young people. While there are many opportunities to volunteer with the organization, mentoring provides a direct avenue to create a meaningful impact by making a nominal investment of time. The Mentor Program provides the necessary structure for success in a mentor/mentee relationship; staff support, extensive training and amazing volunteers all play a role in the program’s success. The Fulfillment Fund is looking for mentors with the following:
- Minimum of 24 years of age

Able to commit to meeting with their stud
ent once per month on their own schedule
- Willing to commit to a mentoring relationship for a minimum of two years
- Able to pass a criminal background check
- Interested in helping a student achieve higher education

Volunteers will assist in providing our developmental therapy to children with disabilities.
Duties include: Leading horses, spotting (walking along side the horse), grooming, cleaning tack, weeding, raking, etc.
Volunteers must be at least 12 years old and if under 18, an adult must come to sign a liability release form at their first session.
Dress code: must wear closed-toe shoes, long pants and a shirt with sleeves (t-shirt is fine; no tank tops). If planning on staying the entire day (which is not mandatory), please bring water and a sack lunch.

Organic Fruit and Vegetable Gardening
The Organic Fruit and Vegetable Gardening classes at the Arboretum combine Biodynamic, Permaculture and other natural gardening techniques that align with the seasons. Each class is part of a 16-hour series that highlights how to build habitat and soil while providing solid horticultural practices for the ins-and-outs of growing organic fruits and vegetables. Tours of the Los Angeles Arboretum Garden for All Seasons and Crescent Farm help to give visual meaning to the concepts you learn in class. It is a great way to connect with the earth, your friends and family, and the community!
Winter – December 10
The winter class is the first class in the series because it is all about preparation. In-depth soil building techniques are discussed along with the soil food web, composting and vermiculture, cover crops, how to build raised beds, winter crops and pruning fruit trees. Suggestions for small space gardening and vertical structures are discussed. Also included in this class are the recurring themes of Urban Agriculture in Action, The Moon, the Stars, the Sky and What They Mean to Us, What a Tool, and The Good, the Bad and The Ugly. Time to break out your tools and get down to business!

Join Family Rescue Center for their weekly Saturday distribution of organic food donated from the Calabasas Farmer's Market. They need happy, helpful volunteers to sort the fruits and vegetables and to hand them out at their center. Four to six volunteers per Saturday is preferable; teens and older, please.

There are lots of talented musicians in the Big Sunday community who have helped Big Sunday projects in all kinds of important ways. For the first time, Big Sunday is hosting a special night of music featuring a few of these musicians including: George Hill (New Directions Veteran Choir); The Hollywood Forever Bluegrass Band (Mark Drop, "Utah Bob" Rosenfield, Maddie Eaton, Ulrich Sinn and Brian Mastalski); Michelle Mayne-Graves (also from the New Directions Veteran Choir); Rob Seals & Co.; Sophie Strauss and, alas, David Levinson. Event admission is free; ages 21 and up; beer and wine will be served. Please RSVP to beenish@bigsunday.org. Donations of new pairs of socks are greatly appreciated and will benefit Big Sunday veteran Adam B.’s sock drive for the homeless.
Explore the hidden stories of Los Angeles families from the 1890s and learn how generosity has influenced our city. Through an Autry Explorer gift exchange, each Explorer will have the opportunity to create a unique gift that allows their generosity to flourish beyond the Autry. Younger Explorers can enjoy a special activity area with books, puzzles, and toys.
Presented in partnership with the Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet School’s 8th-grade class.

Each year people from all walks of life join us to eat, sing (with a live band!) and enjoy the holidays. As always, our guests of honor are the incredible kids from Ability First and the amazing folks from Sunset Hall. We’re also hosting other friends with struggles large and small.
Volunteers are needed to spread some holiday cheer to our invited guests. There will be singing (good singing not necessary — trust us) (and no, you don’t have to sing if you don’t want to). We’ll deck the halls and light a menorah, too. Of course, there will be loads of arts & crafts and delicious holiday treats.
