Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar.
We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

Want to learn about the LA Arboretum from one of their experts? Take part in walking and tram tours led by different staff experts. Each will provide in-depth information on some aspect of the Arboretum with topics ranging from unique trees to intriguing books.

Reading to Kids is a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for success in the future. To this end, Reading to Kids gathers on average 847 children and 376 volunteers at reading clubs on the second Saturday of every month at seven Los Angeles elementary schools.
The Garden School Foundation's workdays are a huge part of the work they do. Once a month, volunteers and community partners come together at their 24th Street school garden (2055 W 24th Street) to have some fun in the sun, enjoy delicious, garden-fresh snacks, and get vital work done that keeps their living classrooms beautiful for the kids they serve. They also have a cooking or gardening workshop during each of their workdays, where volunteers can learn & get inspired about food, from seed to table! Join GSF on Dec. 12! Whether you help greet guests with a smile as they park, jazz up their style with face-painting, hand out water to the runners, or clean up after the race … just imagine the positive impact you will have as you spend your morning rooting for everyone to walk, run or skip their way to the finish line! Chosen as one of the Most Incredible Themed Races, Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis is a fun and festive way to kick off your holidays by helping others! Wear a holiday themed costume. Tie jingle bells to your shoelaces. Raise funds to help find a cure for arthritis, the nation's leading cause of disability. Run or walk a 5 kilometer route with your team members and celebrate the season by giving!
Each year people from all walks of life join us to eat, sing (with a live band) and enjoy the holidays. Special guests have included low-income seniors, kids with challenges, women and children from a domestic violence shelter, veterans and others who needed a little extra TLC during the holidays. Don’t miss this weekly program at the John C. Fremont Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library! Come meet STAR volunteer readers Isaac and Savannah. Read stories together, and learn how to earn a free book. Books come alive for kids when they share the fun of reading with STAR library volunteers. Each month Big Sunday collects at least 600 items in our popular monthly food drive to help hungry and grateful people. Sorting is December 16 from 10 -11 am.
